Human bodies, celestial bodies and grains of life

EUGLOH Annual Summit

Cross your own body, travel through that of the stars, witness a solar flare, dive into a black hole, directly experience gravitational mirages, hear the song of the Earth, see Mars and maybe touch it, feel weightlessness, pulse to the celestial rhythms, contemplate the deep universe, make the complex equations of flowers blossom, catch grains of pollen and see time slow down.

Le sas>opens to all a tangible digital journey of art-science research in the Great Hall of the Orsay Linear Accelerator.

JOURNEY

01_INTO TWO

Magnetic resonance and printing in grayscale on foliated glass – Polyptych of twenty pieces

Deux_dans_d_eux_Polyptique_part 1

Into two explores the inner parts of two people to turn outside their inside; to untangle their mutual intrication; to catch their common dynamics and let those fragile hearts beat.

02_PRIMARY INTIMACY OF BEING

Mirrors augmented with medical imaging, sensors, computers and 75” screens. Triptych in lacquered glass and oak wood.

A mirror reflects a human being, a woman, a man, as revealed by X rays imaging, positron emission tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. In and out of the body shown by CT scan, PET or MRI. The visitors discover on their own a new morphological or metabolical intimacy that was until now hidden to them.

03_THE EYE OF MARS

Martian art-science creation for visitors, sensors, loudspeakers, computers, lenses, mirrors and video- projectors. Aluminium and acrylic.

Immagine2

The Eye of Mars intertwines science, technology, dream, and imagination to focus on the special relationship between humans and Mars: Yesterday, we feared to be invaded by Martians ... today, we long to be there.

04_GRAINS OF EVOLUTION
Polyptych in grogged sandstone, silica and LED

Ilex aquilofium (houx) (1)

Magnified, kneaded, sculpted, heated, a hand of ceramic pollen grains carve the time of the evolution. Each one tells a different story. Altogether, they subsume the structural and functional richness still present in nature. They talk about diversity. The wonder of these unsuspected microscopic living things lies in their fragility which preserves a future.

05_PRONAOS - IN THE AIR

Module of the Pronaos mission, video

07_Pronaos_au_sas_01

Part sculpture, cartography and part film, this installation proposes to explore the trajectory of Pronaos to experiment with the phenomenon of the stratospheric winds and the cosmological diffuse background.

06_COSMIC UTOPIA
Immersive and sensitive cosmolgic exploration

Cosmic Utopia is an immersive installation exploring a speculative thought experiment in which an eternal inflation due to a quantum fluctuation emerges around the Sun, moving an ISS-like space station a fraction of a second away from the control centre on Earth.

07_ARIANNA LAB

Workshop-Laboratory

Laboratoire_Arianna_Pronaos_2021

Arianna Lab takes as its starting point the recovery of objects related to space research. A cabinet of curiosities reflects this ongoing research-creation process and supports the presented works.

08_THE HARMONY OF THE WORLDS

Electrokinetic sculpture

06_L_Harmonie_au_sas_01

Conceived as an illustration of the (only apparent) simplicity of gravity, the Harmony of the Worlds is dictated by the motion of three fictitious systems. An electronic and digital device without screen around Kepler’s laws and the movement of stars.

09_SOLAR ORBITERS
Solar physics, sensors and videoprojector

With the latest solar mission, we will see the poles of the Sun for the first time and get to the bottom of our interaction with it. Here, we are walking on the surface of our star, the one that follows us beyond the visible daily light.

10_SCIdataVR

Collaborative virtual reality

10_SCIdataVR_au_sas_01

The SCIdataVR platform brings our feet in the void of the solar system. Equipped with controllers, several of us can take hold of the planets that make up the solar system in order to observe and manipulate them, to dive into them.

11_THE WEIGHT OF SHADOWS
General relativity, sensor and videoprojector

Le_Poids_des_ombres_2021 La métonymie (1)

The metric of space-time is based on the bodies that fill it. Without realising it, they weigh on it. As they pass, they modify and distort it. As they pass, they cannot be indifferent to it.

12_ACOUSTIC SPACE

Film setup

13_Acoustic_space_au_sas_01

This film explores the idea that our world is a sphere made up of a plurality of centres and without any limits (Marshall McLuhan). It is based on Valentina Terechkova’s unique experience, the first woman to go into space alone in 1963. [Arianna Lab]

13_KIRUNA - MEASURE OF FLUXES

Sound composition, video and Earth’s magnetic field

12_Kiruna_au_sas_01

The Earth is in many ways within the Sun’s sphere of influence. The fickle solar magnetic field is particularly strong at high latitudes and adds to the Earth’s magnetic field. These variations along different times are measured by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and retrieved in real time by the Kiruna algorithm that governs the work. [Arianna Lab]

14_THE SUN'S COURSE

Light sculpture

14_La_Course_du_Soleil

The installation takes its title from the apparent course of the Sun: From sunrise to sunset, it describes a curve that has been materialised by a glass composition alternating transparency and opacity. The glass is a window that gives us a view of our star in its symbolic dimension. A source of life whose circular, all-encompassing shape evokes the love that embraces all things.

15_SEE ME THROUGH YOU

Relativistic art-science composition for visitors, sensors, loudspeakers, computers and video-projectors

15_Vois_moi_a_travers_toi

The presence of a massive celestial body distorts space-time. The presence of another also modifies the environment in which we evolve. See me through you seeks to make visible the deformations of space-time and tangible the relativity of the observer to others by immersion in the deep universe.

16_JULIA'S FLOWERS
Touch screen, loudspeakers and computer

Les_Fleurs_de_Julia_01_2020 Tim Schneider

Julia’s Flowers gives the visitors the opportunity to interactively experience a whole mathematical world on their own. With their fingertips, visitors manipulate the initial conditions of an iterated equation, x→x2+c, and see the outcomes in real time.
