Native to Central Asia, Cannabis sativa has been used for a very long time either in medicine (China, India, Greece...), or especially to make textiles and ropes. Three subspecies can be distinguished: Industrial Hemp (Cannabis sativa subsp. sativa) which is used commercially and industrially as "hemp", Indian Hemp (Cannabis sativa subsp. indica ) known for its psychotropic effects, and Wild Hemp (Cannabis sativa subsp. ruderalis).
